About Dubai

Dubai flagThe modern emirate of Dubai was created with the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971. Dubai shares legal, political, military & economic functions with other emirates within a federal framework, although each emirate has jurisdiction over some functions such as civic law enforcement and provision & upkeep of local facilities.

Wth the largest population, it is the second largest emirate by area, after Abu Dhabi. With Abu Dhabi, it is one of only two emirates with veto power over critical matters of national importance in the UAE.

Dubai has been ruled by the Al Maktoum dynasty since 1833. The emirates' current ruler, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is also the Prime Minister and Vice President of the UAE.

Money Exchanges

Dubai night skylineMost currencies can be freely converted in Dubai and you will find money exchange companies all over Dubai. Exchange houses are open from 8:30 to 13:00 and 16:30 to 20:30. One US dollar equals 3.67 AED.

Credit Cards

All major credit cards are accepted in Dubai, including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club etc. Most establishments accept credit cards, though at some of the smaller ones you will get slightly better prices if you pay in cash.

Clothing

Dubai is a cosmopolitan city and most types of casual dress can be worn. However, in deference to local customs and norms it is a good idea not to wear very short or tight clothing, at least till such time as you are comfortable with the city.

Business Days

All Government offices are closed on Thursday and Friday. Many private sector companies however have their weekend on Friday & Saturday. Shops and supermarkets are open seven days a week, though on Fridays they start business after the afternoon prayers.

Electricity

Electricity supply is 220/240 volts at 50 cycles.

Water

Tap water is quite safe to drink but visitors usually prefer bottled water. This is generally served in hotels and restaurants.

Telephones

Telecommunications are excellent, both within the UAE and with the outside world. Telephone calls within Dubai are free. The mobile phone standard is GSM.

Photography

Normal tourist photography is acceptable but it is considered offensive to photograph Muslim women. Like anywhere, before photographing men it is a good idea to ask permission.

Banks

Most international banks have branches in Dubai, servicing the usual retail and corporate segments. Transfers can be made easily as exchange controls are virtually non-existent, and the Dirham is freely convertible.

Banking hours run from 08:00 to 13:00 Saturday to Wednesday. Some are also open from 16:30 to 18:30. On Thursdays banks operate from 8:00 to 12:00.

Local Time

UAE time is four hours ahead of GMT (i.e. GMT+4).

Events

Dubai hosts world- renowned sporting and entertainment events, particularly from November to March. During the Dubai Shopping Festival, Dubai hosts three extremely high-profile events: the Dubai Desert Classic, a stop on the Professional Golf Association (PGA), tour, the Dubai Open, an ATP event, and the Dubai World Cup, the richest horserace in the world.

Crime

Dubai is generally a safe and friendly city. Crime is rare and you can see tourists and residents walking around the city as late as midnight.

For those who live for the head-rush, Dubai has facilities for Bungee Jumping, Skydiving, Paragliding, Moto-cross, Water Sports, Mountaineering, and more.

Driving License

Permanent UAE driving licenses can only be obtained after a residence visa has been granted. Holders of driving licenses from most countries can rent and drive hired cars within the UAE. However, it is best to check before going out to rent a car. More info...
